Developing and implementing ISO 9001:2015 QMS – 09 – Training and Guidance

Developing and implementing ISO 9001:2015 QMS – 09 – Training and Guidance

=========

Once the action plan is formulated, the organization should focus on training and guidance of people in the organization and determine the training needs of its people. Training of people in the organization is crucial for organizational development and success. It is essential to the achievement of organizational goals and objectives. It is beneficial to both the organization and employees. A trained employee becomes more efficient and productive. An organization can develop the potential of its employees through training.

For better implementation of ISO 9001:2015 QMS, training programmes should be organized for top management, members of steering committee and task force, senior managers, supervisors and workers as per training needs determined for them. As regards implementation of ISO 9001:2015 QMS, the training should cover the basic concepts of quality management system and their overall impact on the strategic goals of the organization, quality management principles, the processes, and likely work culture implications of the system. In addition, specific training may also be necessary on risk-based thinking, documented information, performance evaluation, statistical tools for the members of task force. Some of the staff may also need training on auditing, techniques of laboratory management, calibration, testing procedures etc.

An in-depth training programme covering the following areas should be organized for steering committee members and task force members (as necessary determined for them):

-        ISO 9001:2015 QMS and its requirements

-        Internal audit

-        Statistical tools

-        Creating, retaining and maintaining documented information

The organization can organize such trainings as in-house programmes. The consultant, if appointed, or an external training institution or trainer could be invited to conduct in-house training programmes. When in-house capacity to carry out such training programmes is not available, the organization can depute its personnel to external training programmes organized by professional training organizations, such as, Indian Institute for Quality Management (IIQM), National Centre for Quality Management (NCQM), National Institute of Training for Standardization (NITS), National Institution for Quality and Reliability (NIQR), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) etc. Quality Council of India (QCI) also organizes quality related trainings from time to time, Selected officials may be nominated to QCI training programmes. There are many individual consultants and trainers, who organize and conduct quality related trainings.

The task force coordinator can be the key personnel for implementation of ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. He / she should obtain guidance on specific topics within the quality management system from time to time. Some topic-specific standards that may be referred (the latest version) to are mentioned below:

-        ISO 10001:2018, Quality management, Customer satisfaction, Guidance for codes of conduct for organizations

-        ISO 10002:2018, Quality management, Customer satisfaction, Guidelines for complaints handling in organizations

-        ISO 10003:2018, Quality management, Customer satisfaction, Guidelines for dispute resolution external to the organization

-        ISO 10004:2018, Quality management, Customer satisfaction, Guidelines for monitoring and measuring

-        ISO 10005:2018, Quality management, Guidelines for quality plans

-        ISO 10006:2017, Quality management systems, Guidelines for quality management in projects

-        ISO 10007:2017, Quality management, Guidelines for configuration management

-        ISO 10008:2022, Quality management, Customer satisfaction, Guidelines for business-to-consumer electronic commerce transactions

-        ISO 10012:2003 (Confirmed in 2022), Measurement management systems, Requirements for measurement processes and measuring equipment

-        ISO/TR 10013:2021, Quality management systems, Guidance for documented information

-        ISO 10014:2021, Quality management systems, Managing an organization for quality results, Guideline for realizing financial and economic benefits

-        ISO 10015:2019, Quality management, Guidelines for competence management and people development

-        ISO 10017:2021, Quality management, Guidance on statistical techniques for ISO 9001:2015

-        ISO 10018:2020, Quality management, Guidance for people engagement

-        ISO 10019:2005, Guidelines for the selection of quality management system consultants and use of their services

-        ISO 19011:2018, Guidelines for auditing management systems

The role of top management in providing guidance is pivotal in this process. They should actively support and promote a culture of continual improvement and quality consciousness throughout the organization. Top management's commitment to the quality management system and its principles sets the tone for others to follow. They should lead by example and ensure that resources are allocated appropriately for training initiatives. Additionally, top management should regularly communicate the importance of the quality management system and its alignment with the organization's strategic goals to all employees, fostering a shared vision of quality excellence. This will foster quality culture in the organization.

By prioritizing training and guidance, the organization will be able to foster a knowledgeable and skilled workforce that is committed to delivering high-quality products and services. This, in turn, will lead to enhanced customer satisfaction, improved operational efficiency, and sustained success in a competitive business landscape with an effective robust quality management system.

In conclusion, the successful implementation of ISO 9001:2015 QMS in an organization relies heavily on effective training and guidance for the organization’s people. By investing in comprehensive training programmes, the organization is able to empower its employees with the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to the implementation of the quality management system effectively. Here important point is to note that training should include not only the fundamental concepts of quality management but also specific areas like risk-based thinking, documentation, performance evaluation, and auditing.
